Assunzione, riscatto e partecipazione. Fondamenti, dinamiche e immagini della soteriologia di Ambrogio di Milano
Forgiveness of sins and salvation are frequent topics within the Ambrosian work. It is possible to identify three coordinates of the salvation brought by Christ: the assumption, the ransom and the participation. These coordinates are fully and uniquely fulfilled by the mediation of Christ, the expression of perfect justice, culminating in piety. The redemptive work of Christ is described by Ambrose both with effective images (Samaritan, good shepherd), and through precise scriptural references, and through a paradoxical style which makes us perceive the power of the divine precisely at the point of greatest human abasement: death on the cross. Thus, the blood shed on the cross comes to constitute for Ambrose a powerful and emblematic sign of Christian salvation, a point of convergence of coordinates of thought, rhetorical dynamisms and scriptural references.
