Résumé

Cet article présente un témoin méconnu du traité d’Optat de Milève, œuvre polémique rédigée au ive siècle et source essentielle pour connaître l’histoire du schisme donatiste qui toucha l’Afrique romaine à cette époque. Après un bref aperçu de la transmission du traité et de ses problèmes, l’article fournit une description détaillée de ce nouveau manuscrit, Città del Vaticano, BAV, Ross. 241 (= D), de son histoire, de son contenu et de son apport pour la tradition d’Optat. Copié au xiie siècle en Italie, D est un descendant de l’un des témoins les plus anciens, Sankt-Peterburg, RNB, Q.V.I.2 (s. vi-vii), à travers un intermédiaire perdu. Son apport principal est de documenter la diffusion du traité, dans une tradition manuscrite restreinte et presque exclusivement française. Il s’agit également du seul témoin connu circulant sous le nom d’Augustin d’Hippone, au sein d’une collection d’œuvres de ce dernier.

Abstract

This article presents a neglected witness of the polemical treatise of Optatus of Milevis, an essential source for the history of the Donatist schism written in the fourth century. After an overview of the transmission of Optatus’ work and its problems, the article offers a detailed description of the new witness, Città del Vaticano, BAV, Ross. 241 (= D), its history, contents and significance for the tradition of Optatus. Copied in the twelfth century in Italy, D is a descendant of one of the oldest manuscripts of Optatus, Sankt-Peterburg, RNB, Q.V.I.2 (s. vi-vii), through a now-lost intermediary. Its main contribution is to shed new light on the diffusion of the work, within a limited manuscript tradition mostly confined to France. D is also the only witness which attributes the work to Augustine of Hippo, and transmits it within a collection of Augustinian texts.
