Abstract
The article explores the various uses of the image of vertigo in the work of John Chrysostom and its implications for his exegesis and theology. Combining moral and dogmatic features, Chrysostom shows vertigo as spiritual blindness. Paradoxically, it is also a pedagogical means implemented by God and the preacher to lead humans to faith. Biblical figures climbing up mountains represent humans in their difficult ascent towards knowledge and salvation.
