The commentary on Is 6 by Theodoret of Cyrrhus (5th century) gives us a new example of how Theodoret uses two different works of John Chrysostom (the Commentary on Isaiah but also the Homilies on Uzziah) among other sources (such as Eusebius of Caesarea). Beyond the traditional exegesis, this commentary is characterised by its uncommon interpretation of Isaiah’s “unclean lips” as the consequence of his sinful silence after Uzziah’s prevarication. Actually, this reading gives shape to the exegesis of the entire passage: on this background, the bishop of Cyrrhus describes the movement of conversion from confession to reparation, a movement at the end of which the purified sinner is able to assume a greater mission than before. The exegete also constructs an opposition between converted and hardened sinner (Uzziah or people). More discreetly, he shows how human freedom and divine action are articulated.
