Abstract

An inclusio structure of exegetical remarks by Evagrius of Pontus concerning a few verses near the beginning of Proverbs chapter four rests upon an underlying logic. The first poetic line of Prov. 4:8 forms an inclusio structure with the final poetic line of Prov. 3:35. Both phrases feature ὑψόω, I lift high, raise up, or exalt, and both lines describe the activities of the wise and the foolish of raising up or being raised up. Within this inclusio structure lie two brief exegetical remarks which detail the ‘mechanics’ of how wisdom raises up those who possess it. The first of these scholia addresses the good gift of the law of God which facilitates the raising up of the wise. The second remark reveals in a pragmatic way how this good gift is lost. Moreover, Evagrius reinforced this basic inclusio structure with a sophisticated web of thematic supporting sub-points. This rich, complex, and yet coherent structure helps answer Géhin’s remark that Evagrius’ choice of which proverbs upon which to comment is curious. It also adds to a gradually emerging portrait of the Scholia on Proverbs that removes it from the category of disordered miscellany and sets it kindred to other Evagrian works with thematic string structures.
