Abstract

The opposition between copy and original is used by Clement of Alexandria to indicate, according to an ontological inversion of time, the relationship between the traces of truth scattered throughout human history and the original model definitively revealed by the Word made flesh. Following this intention, Clement succeeds in describing human history by combining biblical and Platonic terminologies. Humanity is thus endowed with fragments of truth that God has sown in each human being. Clement recognizes these traces of truth in the insights of the sages and philosophers concerning the existence of God, his providence and justice, and the possilbility for man to freely achieve virtue. Thanks to this historical-theological vision, the Logos is at once divine power and the place where all powers converge in unity, without being reduced to their sum.
